For us as a winery in Cochem, this dry Riesling is an expression of our home and tradition.
This is exactly what a Fuder barrel represents.
This is a classic 100-liter oak barrel for wine from Germany, which is mainly used here on the Moselle.
Originally, this wine barrel was used for transportation.
Hence the name, which is derived from “Fuhre”.
A Fuder is made of German oak wood, with thin staves and is completely round.
This naturally simplified the shipping of wine in earlier times.
Today, wine is shipped in bottles, but the Fuderfass remains and is still used by winemakers to ferment and store special wines.
We pack one of our best vineyards into the Fuder every year.
This is because, in combination with the oak, it requires a strong and particularly aromatic wine.
Otherwise the wood aroma quickly becomes too dominant in the wine.
With the dry Riesling from the Pommerner Sonnenuhr, a famous vineyard on the Moselle, we have found the perfect wine for this.
Our Fuder 1 has classic Riesling notes, such as ripe stone fruit and delicate citrus fruit.
There is also a gentle hint of vanilla.
This Riesling grows on a steep slope on slate soil.
This also gives it an impressive minerality and spiciness.
The micro-oxygenation in wooden barrels and the long yeast ageing give the wine a beautiful fullness without too much alcohol.
